What has been new lately?? Well about the middle of January I found a new job. Sort of. Very on the demand medic work for an industrial paramedic company. Different from the last first aid company I worked for in many ways. About the end of January, I was able to head out to my first oil rig job and I was very surprised. Could a medic job be so lax? I had my own shack, a 32 inch flatscreen TV, internet, cell service and my own bathroom (big bonus). Sure my equipment and my truck needed checked everyday and I had a bit of paperwork but the worst part of the entire thing was driving to the site. So much for radio controlled roads. Bah. . .Albertans.
I spent a week out on that site trying to understand the rig and the logistics a little bit more. The consultant was great and explained a few things for me but of course, I always have more questions. The camp was good. I learned a lot more about celiac disease because one of the woman's husband has the same thing. She educated me on things I didn't understand and believe me, I now know when I can't eat something. My stomach just screams because I haven't eaten anything with gluten for over a month now.
After change out, I headed to Grande Prairie. Never been there. I picked up a few things and waited to be sent out to my next job. I HATE WAITING. It's not like I have ever been patient in the first place but knowing you're in a city you don't know for a day when you could be making money KILLS you.
5 AM came and I headed out to my next job north of Athabasca. I had some technical issues. The fire alarm went off in the back of my unit and was driving me batty so in the -40, I stopped at the side of the highway to disconnect the blasted thing. And my door froze open. Joy. I headed to Valleyview, stopped, tied the thing closed with and extension cord (they don't tie well in -40) and carried on. Later, I stopped at a UFA and took advantage of my woman skills, flirting a bungee cord off some poor, innocent young man. Finally after 11 hours of driving, I drove into camp only getting slightly lost and phoning the consultant about 10 times. I get site orientated and during my orientation, I happened to mention shifts. What times am I working? Nights. I think I was already insane by the that time. You could just imagine what I looked like a 7 AM the next morning.
Anyways, here I am. In camp till most likely March 15th. I've been working nights steady, gotten used to eating steak for breakfast and scrambled eggs for dinner.
I've already made a few waves. Kicked a guy off site because he showed up . . . not sober. Let's just say the drilling company doesn't like me much. The consulting company is giving me a safety award bahahaha. The guy is blackballed from the company because he decided to threaten me and ended up getting hauled out by the cops. I've gotten proposed to three times, applied for like ten different degrees and started a Calculus course.
You learn alot when you're out here. I should start a reality show about camp drama. It would be as pathetic as Jersey Shore.
